Statement of Intent
Protecting biodiversity is of upmost importance and there is no place for produce that has been grown on land that is illegally used or occupied within our business. MJ Birtwistles & Co Ltd recognises the critical need to ensure its sustainability by carrying out its purchasing activities in an environmentally responsible manner. As an extension of our Biodiversity Policy, we aim to ensure that our value chain does not have a detrimental impact on global ecosystems.
Commitment to New Regulations
Here at Birtwistles we are in 100% agreeance with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and the UK Forest Risk Commodities Regulation. As deforestation is destroying one of the most important biomes around world, threatening the lives of many species and aiding the acceleration of climate change. We are committed to ending illegal deforestation within our supply chain. To ensure this commitment is successful, we will only be working with suppliers that are committed to the same goal. Deforestation will become a vital aspect of our supplier approval process and we will not be working with any suppliers that are not monitoring their beef supply chains and can provide full traceability of the products they supply.
Sustainable Procurement
We will give preference to purchasing environmentally preferable products and services that meet our current performance, safety, and regulatory requirements. Also purchasing will place a preference on the use of the least environmentally damaging products. As a result, we will start developing our procurement to take quality, cost and sustainability into account, which includes:
• Specifying wherever possible and reasonably practicable, the use of environmentally friendly or sustainable materials and products.
• Promoting the use of long lasting and recyclable products.
• Not using environmentally damaging products where an alternative product or method is available.
• Sourcing and purchasing items from local producers and suppliers wherever possible.
This deforestation policy will be an ongoing procedure to be reviewed annually and will take into account both changing circumstances and improved environmental awareness within MJ Birtwistles & Co Ltd.
