As part of our ongoing Dukesmoor journey to source the finest quality native British breeds, team members Glenn Eastwood, Rob Kelly, Andy Green, and Adela Kaczmarek visited Hartshead Meats, our local supplier.
The day began with a tour of their slaughter plant facilities led by Keith Jordan, the General Manager. We observed their daily operations and their adherence to the highest standards. As we were guided through the process, from the careful handling and husbandry of animals and the further breakdown of carcasses to the selection of specific cuts of beef, we also learned about the various quality assurance schemes in place, such as Red Tractor certification and Farm Assured programs. It was evident that Hartshead Meats is committed to ensuring that every step of the journey, from farm to table, meets the highest standards.
Later, under the guidance of farmer Andrew Hobson, we visited his family farms. Here, we were introduced to iconic native British breeds, each with unique characteristics and histories. These included Belted Galloway cows, known for their striking black coats and distinctive white belts, as well as Hereford and Black Angus breeds.
Our hosts shared their commitment to sustainable farming practices, such as the Moorland and Rough Grazing scheme, which not only ensures the well-being of the animals but also enhances the quality of the beef.
Our visit to Hartshead Meats not only strengthened our commitment to sourcing the best beef but also opened doors to exciting new possibilities for Dukesmoor.
The journey continues, and with partners like Hartshead Meats, the future looks incredibly promising.
